Wrong:  “We’re there to find problems.  It’s almost like we’re gettingpaid by the finding.”

Right:  “We’re there to help the site improve.”

Generally, inconducting an independent audit of an operating facility, both internal andthird-party auditors are asked to be objective in their evaluation, areexpected to work with the site in a supportive way to achieve improvement, andoccasionally are asked to help the site prepare for a regulatory agencyinspection. Auditors do not always appreciate the nature of their role and howtheir role differs from that of an agency inspector.  There have beencases in which auditors have stated in the opening conference, “We get paid bythe finding.”  Although this is said in jest, site staff clearly will notappreciate the humor.  Other auditors visibly relish uncoveringdeficiencies and have informal awards among themselves for the “finding of theaudit.”  Still other auditors are sensitive about being perceived as nothaving exerted sufficient effort if a finding threshold is not reached andabout hearing “you just did not look hard enough.”

There should be nojoy in identifying shortcomings.  The role of the auditors is to beprofessional, independent, objective, and without bias and to let the factsdictate the outcome.  An audit with very few findings does not necessarilymean the auditors didn’t do their job.  It more likely means that the siteis well run.
