Fault trees are constructed by beginning with thetop event, and deducing the major events that can directly lead to it.
In the next steps, each of these intermediateevents is considered in turn.
The eventsthat occur to contribute to this single event are identified.
This development of the fault tree continuesuntil all of the branches have been terminated by basic events.

In practise, the method consists out of threesteps:
