INTRODUCTION:
These tool-box talks are designed to assistsupervisor at all levels to deliver tool box talks on projects’ EHS management.the person giving the talk can using their own-experience if you feel they arerelevant to the site where the talk is being given.
HOW TO USE TOOL-BOX TALKS
PREPARE
1. think about what preparation is required beforethe talk.
2.prior to the talk,check the safety aspects of thelocation.
3.keep distractions to a minimum.
4.consider effective aids you can use to enhancethe talk.
REASON:WHY ARE YOU GIVING THE TALK?
1.employees are generally information proof, theyfilter out what they can ignore, in giving a talk you have to make sure thatyou grab their interest from the start.
2.get their attention as quickly as possible. You won’tget the attention of your people by saying”well its time for another safetytalk…”
3.look for interesting opening lines. Each sectionin the book will offer a suggestion but of course you may choose an examplefrom experience.
4. try to telling a dramatic story related to thesubject, perhaps something read in the press. E.g. how a Scaffolder fell todeath because he didn’t tie on.
5.giving statistics from the industry can help getthe message across”the construction industry employs 5.4% of the total UKworkforce but accounts for 32.3% of all the accident at work.” Chinese statisticsare a little more difficult to find, although over 100,000 people are killedeach year at work in china.
WHY: WHAT INCENTIVES IS THERE FOR PEOPLE TO LISTENTO YOU?
1.consider why anyone should listen to you. You won’tlisten simply because you are the supervisor manager or the boss, you have toearn that right by being both interesting and concerned for their safety.
2.think about news paper that the workers couldread? How do these newspapers get the attention of their readers? What kindheadlines do they use and how are you going to compete.
3.a tool box talk shouldn’t be just one way, it’simportant to engage people in discussion, especially when talking toexperienced people.
OUTLINE: THIS IS IMPORTANT AS ITS HERE THAT YOUWILL DETAIL THE MAJOR STAGES OF YOUR TALK
1.clearly indicate the major stages you willconcentrate on.
2.decide on the major key points you want to make. Choosethose points that you relevant to your site.
3.people will only be able to cope with about 4 to5 pieces of information on these sheets, choose information that is relevant toyour work place.
PREPARATION
1.allow yourself 30 minutes to read through therelevant card and decide which points are relevant for the people at yourparticular workplace.
2.a good beginning and a good end areimportant---people will remember them so they must contain good points
3.peple will start thinking when they are ask aquestion so use questions during your talk. Don’t just wait until the end
4.don’t assume that you have all the knowledge orinformation on the subject, questions will show that you are open to gatheringadditional information from the group.
5.many people try to include too much informationin their talk, the aim of these talks is to get people remember a few critical points
6.you need to make is easy for people to be able toremember
7.you can do this by limiting the talk to 3 to 4major stages with 3 to 5 key points under each stage
8.don’t be tempted to read all the information fromthis book, choose the stages which are relevant you your site situation andthen at key points in each stage choose the information which you feel isrelevant.
DELIVERY
1.your attitude is important, it will show by theway you present yourself. You believe it’s important so you have to convey yoursense of enthusiasm for the subject.
  • Be positive  thiscomes through preparation
  • Be firm  getthe message across-don’t get side tracked
  • Be confident look at people, involve them in the talk.
  • Be serious  health and safety is a serious subject, the overall approach should beserious.
2. you must communicate the message as clearly aspossible, if you do it right, the message could save a life.
Questions
1.remeber ask the question. Pause to give peopletime to think and finally, choose who you want to answer, make sure as manypeople as possible get to answer questions.
2.if incorrect, don’t ridicule, put down or laugh. Restatethe question to make sure it is clear and give people time to think of a reply,but avoid simply giving the answer yourself.
3.if there is an awkward silence, rephrase thequestion and allow people to a reasonable amount of thinking time.
